An authentic specimen of the ammonite Eotetragonites umbilicostriatus, sourced from the renowned Cretaceous deposits of Mahajanga, Madagascar. Dating back to the Albian stage of the Lower Cretaceous, approximately 110 million years ago, this hand-sized specimen showcases a naturally preserved shell surface rather than a polished finish. It exhibits a beautiful range of dark grey-brown to charcoal tones, accented by subtle areas of natural pearly iridescence that catch the light when rotated.
This specific piece is characterised by an exceptionally clear, open central umbilicus and distinct curved constrictions that sweep across its outer whorl. Measuring just over 5 cm at its widest point and weighing 65 grams, it is a tactile, highly detailed representative of Cretaceous marine life. Formation & Preservation
During the Albian stage of the Cretaceous Period, the region now known as Mahajanga, Madagascar, lay beneath a warm, shallow epicontinental sea. When these cephalopods died, their shells sank into the soft, oxygen-poor sediment of the seabed. Over millions of years, fine silts and muds compressed the shells, protecting them from scavenging and erosion. Dissolved minerals gradually permeated the hollow chambers of the shell, preserving the mineralised structure with exceptional fidelity and leaving portions of the original aragonite shell intact to produce a subtle pearly lustre.
