Curator Note
Each specimen is a classic example of classic English palaeontology. The preparation has been carefully executed to expose the prominent ribbing of the Promicroceras shell while retaining the rugged, tactile appeal of the original limestone matrix. These are highly tactile, historic pieces from one of the world's most famous fossil localities.

About This Fossil
This genuine Promicroceras sp. ammonite remains beautifully nestled within its original natural rock matrix, just as it was discovered on the historic beaches of Dorset. Characterised by its tightly coiled, prominently ribbed shell, this specimen offers a tangible connection to the ancient marine ecosystems of the British Jurassic. Each piece is entirely unique, showcasing the natural variation of preservation, shell completeness, and rib definition that makes hand-collected fossils so compelling.
These specimens represent the classic 'Lyme Regis ammonite' and are often found alongside partial shells, smaller ammonites, or faint impressions in the same block of stone. This natural presentation reflects the incredibly fossil-rich nature of the ancient seafloor where these creatures once thrived in vast numbers. It is both a beautiful natural sculpture and an authentic piece of Earth's deep history.
Formation & Preservation
These fossils are sourced from the internationally renowned Jurassic Coast of Lyme Regis, Dorset. Approximately 195 million years ago, this area was a warm, relatively shallow subtropical sea. When these free-swimming cephalopods died, their shells sank to the muddy seabed, where they were rapidly covered by fine sediment. Over millions of years, pressure and mineral-rich waters slowly turned the surrounding mud into solid limestone and shale, beautifully preserving the delicate calcite shells of the ammonites within.

Authenticity & Sourcing
Real vs Replica
- This is a genuine fossil — not a replica unless clearly stated. Clearly described and honestly presented.
- You will receive the exact specimen you select.
Ethical Sourcing
- Sourced from established suppliers and known commercial sites. We do not buy from localities we know to be protected, scientifically restricted, or subject to export controls. Origin and sourcing information is shared where known.
- ✓We will not knowingly handle specimens removed in breach of any country's heritage or export laws.
Origin & Natural Variation
Stated origin (Lyme Regis, Dorset, England) and formation (Blue Lias Formation) are based on supplier information and available geological references. Identification can vary in certainty — especially for fragments — so where exact locality cannot be independently verified, we describe the formation rather than a single quarry.
Fossils are natural objects. Expect minor variation in colour, surface texture, and matrix, mineralisation and surface detail. Treatment information is shown under Condition & Treatment where it is recorded. “Not recorded” means we hold no verified record for that detail; it is not a claim that no treatment occurred.
Read our full authenticity & honest descriptions policy or the authenticity & sourcing clause in our terms.
