About This Fossil
Discover hundreds of millions of years of Earth's history with the Big Bang Fossil Bag – an educational starter collection containing 10 genuine fossil specimens, individual information cards, a geological time chart and a magnifying glass.
Designed as an accessible introduction to fossils, palaeontology and the history of life on Earth, this collection is ideal for children, beginner fossil collectors, educational activities and anyone fascinated by prehistoric life.
Each fossil is supplied with its own information card, helping the collector learn more about the specimen and the type of organism it represents. A small magnifying glass is also included, making it easy to examine the textures, structures and finer details preserved within the fossils.
The collection also includes a geological time chart covering the major divisions of Earth history, from the Precambrian through the Palaeozoic and Mesozoic and into more recent geological time. It illustrates important stages in the development of life, including early marine organisms, trilobites, fish, reptiles, dinosaurs and mammals.
Each bag contains 10 genuine fossil specimens. The exact assortment can vary, but specimens represented within these collections may include:
• Petrified Wood – A polished piece of fossilised wood in which the original organic material has been replaced by minerals over geological time.
• Fossil Shark Tooth – A genuine fossil shark tooth. Some bags may contain more than one tooth, with the exact size, colour and appearance varying naturally between specimens.
• Fossil Sea Urchin – The fossilised remains of an echinoid, the group of marine animals that includes modern sea urchins and sand dollars.
• Brachiopod – A fossil from an ancient group of marine animals protected by two hard shells. Brachiopods were particularly abundant during the Palaeozoic Era.
• Orthoconic Nautiloid – A straight-shelled marine cephalopod fossil related to the wider group that includes modern nautiluses, squid and cuttlefish.
• Dinosaur Bone – A genuine fragment of fossilised dinosaur bone supplied as Jurassic dinosaur material. The fossil preserves the mineralised structure of bone from an animal that lived during the age of the dinosaurs.
• Elrathia Trilobite – A genuine Cambrian trilobite approximately 500 million years old. Trilobites were an extraordinarily successful group of marine arthropods that survived for more than 250 million years.
• Bryozoan – Fossilised remains of bryozoans, tiny colonial aquatic animals that formed intricate colonies and have an extensive fossil record stretching back hundreds of millions of years.
• Ammonite – A fossil from an extinct group of marine cephalopods famous for their distinctive coiled shells. Ammonites became some of the most successful marine animals of the Mesozoic Era.
• Precambrian Fossil Material – Ancient material identified within the supplied educational collection as fossilised algae, representing some of the earliest chapters in the history of life on Earth.
• Crinoid Stem – Part of the fossilised stem of a crinoid, a marine echinoderm related to modern starfish and sea urchins. Crinoids are sometimes called “sea lilies” because of their flower-like appearance.
The set also contains additional educational material, including a passage by Bert Leston Taylor relating to Stegosaurus, alongside the geological time chart that helps place the fossils within the enormous timeline of Earth's history.
Because every fossil is genuine, no two collections will be exactly alike. The size, shape, colour, preservation and appearance of individual specimens will naturally vary, and the precise selection within each bag may differ.
The Big Bang Fossil Bag makes an excellent first fossil collection and provides a hands-on way to explore geology, evolution, palaeontology and the history of life.
Perfect for:
• Children interested in dinosaurs and fossils • Beginner fossil collectors • Educational activities and home learning • School geology and palaeontology projects • Birthday and Christmas gifts • Anyone looking for an affordable introduction to genuine fossils
Each Big Bang Fossil Bag includes:
• 10 genuine fossil specimens • Individual fossil information cards • Geological time chart • Small magnifying glass • Additional prehistoric-life educational material
A fascinating collection of genuine fossils spanning hundreds of millions of years of Earth's history – all together in one educational starter set.
Formation & Preservation
The collection demonstrates the variety of ways genuine fossils can preserve the remains and traces of ancient life. Each specimen shows natural variation in size, shape, colour, preservation and appearance, and the precise selection may differ from bag to bag.
What Makes This Specimen Special
This educational starter collection brings together 10 genuine fossil specimens, individual information cards, a geological time chart, a magnifying glass and additional prehistoric-life material. The assortment can vary between bags, so each collection offers a different hands-on introduction to fossils and the history of life.
Authenticity & Sourcing
Real vs Replica
- This is a genuine fossil — not a replica unless clearly stated. Clearly described and honestly presented.
- You will receive a specimen similar to the one shown — see Natural Variation below.
Ethical Sourcing
- Sourced from established suppliers and known commercial sites. We do not buy from localities we know to be protected, scientifically restricted, or subject to export controls. Origin and sourcing information is shared where known.
- ✓We will not knowingly handle specimens removed in breach of any country's heritage or export laws.
Origin & Natural Variation
Stated origin are based on supplier information and available geological references. Identification can vary in certainty — especially for fragments — so where exact locality cannot be independently verified, we describe the formation rather than a single quarry.
Fossils are natural objects. Expect minor variation in colour, surface texture, and matrix, mineralisation and surface detail. Treatment information is shown under Condition & Treatment where it is recorded. “Not recorded” means we hold no verified record for that detail; it is not a claim that no treatment occurred.
Read our full authenticity & honest descriptions policy or the authenticity & sourcing clause in our terms.
