About This Fossil
This slice of Atlasaurus bone offers a captivating window into the skeletal structure of a Jurassic giant. Named for the Atlas Mountains of Morocco where it was first discovered, Atlasaurus was an extraordinary sauropod, distinguished by its unusually long legs for its body size. When viewed in cross-section, the intricate trabecular or 'spongy' bone structure is beautifully preserved, often mineralised with deep earthy tones that highlight the internal vascular patterns.
Each slice is expertly cut and polished on both faces to reveal the complex biological architecture that once supported many tonnes of weight. These specimens serve as significant tactile links to the Middle Jurassic, providing a more intimate understanding of dinosaur physiology than can be gained from casts or models alone.
Formation & Preservation
These fossils were preserved within the continental red beds of the Middle Jurassic. Over millions of years, as the organic material of the bone decayed, mineral-rich groundwater permeated the porous structure. This process of permineralisation replaced the cellular voids with minerals such as silica and calcite, effectively turning the bone into stone while retaining the original microscopic anatomy.
What Makes This Specimen Special
Atlasaurus is a genus unique to North Africa, making its remains particularly desirable for those looking to expand their collection beyond the common North American finds. The preservation quality in these slices is exceptional, showing the clear distinction between the dense cortical bone and the porous interior.
Authenticity & Sourcing
Real vs Replica
- This is a genuine fossil. Authenticity guaranteed in writing.
- You will receive a specimen similar to the one shown — see Natural Variation below.
Ethical Sourcing
- Sourced from established, long-standing suppliers and known commercial sites — never protected, scientifically significant, or restricted localities.
- ✓We will not knowingly handle fossils removed in breach of any country's heritage or export laws.
Origin & Natural Variation
Stated origin (Atlas Mountains, Morocco) and formation (Guettioua Formation) reflect the best information from our supplier and accepted geological literature. Where exact locality cannot be independently verified, we describe the formation rather than a single quarry.
Fossils are natural objects. Expect minor variation in colour, matrix, mineralisation, and surface detail. Any significant repair, restoration, or composite preparation is disclosed in the description — we never present restored areas as original without saying so.
