About This Fossil
This slice of Atlasaurus bone offers a captivating window into the skeletal structure of a Jurassic giant. Named for the Atlas Mountains of Morocco where it was first discovered, Atlasaurus was an extraordinary sauropod, distinguished by its unusually long legs for its body size. Formation & Preservation
These fossils were preserved within the continental red beds of the Middle Jurassic. Over millions of years, as the organic material of the bone decayed, mineral-rich groundwater permeated the porous structure. This process of permineralisation replaced the cellular voids with minerals such as silica and calcite, effectively turning the bone into stone while retaining the original microscopic anatomy.
